Exhibition introduction
Hyojin Park
Co-existence
In 2016, I presented the first series of Hyojin Park solo project, and since then, I have been consistently throwing messages on individual narratives of ‘me’ and ‘you,’and phenomena within the community of ‘us.’ I continue to work through various media such as performances, albums, and exhibitions. Especially last year, 2022, I presented the sixth and final piece of the solo project series, portraying our lives, in which the past, present, and future co-exist, through a performing arts -Co-existence-.
The piece, which was sequentially presented in Daegu, Seoul, Incheon, Gokseong, Taean, Ganghwa, and so on, begins with a relationship stemming from ‘me.’ It goes on to illustrate the process of exploring the value of communities formed by relationships between ‘individuals.’ As the series is carried out in each location, it touches on the meaning of communities where ‘individuals’ gathered and created its message through the creative collaboration of the performer and audience. Doing projects relating to artistic expression methods, I organized an open round table as an extension and an expanded concept, along with the exhibition and performances, to provide an opportunity to grasp collective identity in an individualistic society.

First and foremost, I wanted to open up a path for collaboration with fellow artists as I planned an exhibition under my personal theme, “Connect, How can we meet each other.” Despite different artistic backgrounds, ‘oriental painting,’ ‘sculpture,’ ‘photography,’ and ‘gugak,’ four young creators with similar concerns and awareness could come together. And we’ve decided to acknowledge the social issues of ‘community’ in the era of individualism and personalized experiences, and to present works with each individual’s interpretation of the theme ‘human relationships.’

Each artist displayed individual works based on their keywords. The exhibition threw in themes on human relationships, particularly community and coexistence, for the audience to have new experiences before diverse artworks. This process opened up a possibility for the act of the audience seeing and feeling itself to become one of the artworks. The exhibition’s opening performance portrays the unpredictable sound and images arising from ‘artists’ relationships’ or ‘audience and artists’ relationships.’ As preparing the exhibition, the participating artists discussed mutual artistic communication and presented the results through a performance. Also, we collected keywords on relationships during the exhibition. And during the roundtable, which was a space to share them, people from different fields gathered to focus on the values of a community.
This exhibition, which expands and zooms in on the domain beyond the typical genre-centric art activities, and its associated programs felt natural to me rather than feeling like an experiment. If I were to plan something in the future, I feel we can set a clear narrative and demonstrate collaborative art pieces that go beyond individual works, exploring another possibility of neighboring arts.
